The Faculty of Agriculture and Science offers broad-based education and training in the application of science to practical business-oriented agriculture and entrepreneurship to enhance rural livelihoods, poverty reduction, and food security. Agriculture is taught with a new perspective to bring growth, innovation, ingenuity and experience to the market. The Faculty’s approach is to operationalize an entrepreneurial model in order to contribute to employment creation to relieve the unconscionably high unemployment rates in South Africa, especially in the rural areas of the country. In this respect, all qualifications offered are linked to industry and employer needs to promote employability and career consciousness, stability, and sustainability.
The potential of staff and students is unlocked with creativity in teaching, research and community engagement including partnerships with industry. The following ten departments make up the faculty: Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Extension, Agronomy, Livestock & Pasture Science, Chemistry, Physics, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Botany and Zoology. Students learn in an environment where theory is integrated into practice through placement in industries. The KSTI has collaboration with strategic partners with the aim of placing students in industries, businesses and communities for science and entrepreneurship skills development.
